The language analysis exam
One page: reading time plan, structure, timing, checklist.
Reading time (15 min)
- Read the article(s) once for argument, once for technique.
- Underline the contention, the audience, and any tone shifts.
- Circle 6–8 techniques with strong potential for analysis.
- Sketch a one-line plan: intro claim + 3 body ideas in order of the piece.
Structure
- Intro: form, source, contention, audience & tone — three tight sentences.
- Body: follow the piece’s structure — techniques in the order they appear, not by type.
- Each point: technique + quote → effect on reader → link to contention.
- Conclusion: one or two sentences on overall persuasive intent — no new evidence.
Timing (for a 60-min response)
- 15 min — reading & annotating.
- 5 min — plan.
- 35 min — writing.
- 5 min — edit pass.
Final checklist
- Every paragraph names the audience, not just the technique.
- No plot/content summary — only argument and effect.
- Tone words are calibrated, not just “angry” or “persuasive.”
- Visuals (if present) are analysed, not just described.
